Mitch Iburg and Zoe Powell: Coil-built Vessels Workshop, August 17-18

Mitch Iburg and Zoe Powell: Coil-built Vessels Workshop, August 17-18

from $500.00

Join artists Mitch Iburg and Zoë Powell at Dusted and Blue Ceramics studio in San Francisco, California for a weekend class exploring coil-built vessels.

In this 2-day workshop, Mitch & Zoë will demonstrate coil-building techniques that can be used to create a variety of shapes with historical and contemporary references. By focusing on methods to aid efficiency and durability, the information provided will allow participants to build quickly and work on a larger scale. Students will also learn foot- wedging techniques for incorporating sand, grog, and other aggregates to improve clay body strength and visual qualities.

Participants are encouraged to combine these techniques with other making methods to produce unique sculptural vessels and objects. Each student can expect to make a small jar in Mitch’s style and/or a small sculptural vessel in Zoë’s style. Maximum dimensions of pieces for this course is 10” in any direction.

August 17 & 18th, 10-5pm with a 1hr lunch break

Day 1: class introductions, forming demonstrations, guided student work time

Day 2: trimming/finishing demonstration, guided student work time

Additional Workshop Info and Terms:

This workshop is intro- level friendly!

Attendees can either bring their personal tools or purchase a tool kit from the Dusted and Blue shop. A list of recommended tools to bring will be e-mailed to you before the workshop.

Workshop tuition includes clay and bisque firing of all pieces. For an additional fee, Dusted and Blue can offer to glaze and glaze fire pieces on the attendees' behalf.

If traveling from out of town, students can plan to pick up bisque pieces within 5-10 days after the workshop is complete. Time depends on overall size and thickness of the pieces and if pieces are considered high risk, Dusted and Blue will need more time so the piece can dry out before firing - this will prevent the pieces from breaking or exploding in the kiln.

For an extra fee, Dusted and Blue can ship work for those who are traveling. Please email friends@dustedandblue.com to arrange shipping. Please note, if pieces are shipped Dusted and Blue is not responsible for any breakage of pieces through transit.

Once pieces are fired, attendees will be notified and items must be picked up within two weeks of notification.
